Life Skills

Reading

This is the text of the next video, this text is a transcription for me in this way there will be something wrong, but I think we can understand what it means:

I'm... my name is Chris Hadfield I'm Canadian I'm an engineer and a pilot and a test pilot , in time free a guitar player and I've been for the last 21 years flown in space three times and most recently commanded the International Space Station

We often hear today: 'Education is not enough - people need skills.' What do you think?

So I think what's needed is competence you have to be competent at the beginning right and so the core education is absolutely critical but it's not everything man just being technically competent is expected but it's the other things that were really make the difference it's the ability to communicate with the people around you, it's the ability to prepare for things that are going go wrong Lot of people just expect things to go well and kinda(un poco) visualize success there's is not point in it really because things always go wrong that's a guarantee and how you succeeded how you succeed in life largely is affected by how you prepared for things to go wrong how you visualize failure and and thought about that not just tell you visualize success so it's those skills of communicating with other people and visualizing how life is liable to go and how you're going to get yourself ready for it beyond the core at the education itself that really is the determinant of success in life

Which Life Skills were crucial for you when you were up in space?...

when you are an astronaut inside a spaceship one other comment things we say to each other is and it sounds a little funny but we say What's the next thing is going to kill me, what is that next thing that's going to kill me or kill us and it is, it's obviously it's probably it's going to kill you but it's a way to focus everybody's mind on what really matters how do you prioritize. Inside a spaceship there are a million things competing for your attention and if you don't understand how to pay attention the ones that really matter then you're probably going to miss something critical and you're going to make the wrong decision at the wrong time or the right time what you need to be able to do is prioritize to be able to say okay yes I'm worried about that and yes I'm worried about that, I'm worried about my sister's wedding and I'm worried about that I need to get the oil changing the car I'm worried about this thing two weeks from now  what really matters actually it's what's happening this afternoon or this morning and there is nothing more important than what I'm doing right now is we're thinking about that just by definition there is nothing more important than what you're doing right now and that's worth concentrating on and then the next thing and you might have just remind yourself what's the next thing that's going to kill me then that helps you keep track but how to focus on what's really important in your life and then maybe be able to pick out of all the noise the actualyl  melody of things that are your responsibility

... and which have you needed back down on Earth?

The book that I wrote I call it an astronaut's guide to life on earth because that's what really matters not astrounauts guide to life in space who really cares what we do in space it's technically important but it's actually the life I'm earth that gets you ready to fly in space it's the years unseen preparation it's the skills that you develop but even the soft skills that you develop the way that you cope(enfrentas) with problems the way that you learn things how you've decided an invented to work with the team how you come into a new situation sometimes if you exaggerate a problem like looking at it under a microscope you can see it more clearly astronauts' lives are exaggerated were kinda (un poco) we live in an extreme environment and so it helps maybe sometimes see more clearly what is important what coping mechanisms can you use to be better successful life things like when you come into a new situation what should be your attitude should you coming and try and fix things right away should you coming and never do anything should you coming in sort of a neutral position it and that after a while I always what I'll recomnend I'm a confident guy I want to come into and start making my important knowing you know hey I'm here and Iike you know that's wrong and I can fix this and you know obviously but I learned a little later in life that your almost always better unless the building's on fire you need to react right away you're better to come in an aim sort of to be a zero at first aim to be a zero for a while and then maybe after a while you you'll see a way to be a plus one and a positive effect on what's happening but if you come blundering(torpe) in immediately thinking that you're God's gift to the situation and you're a big plus one influence everybody around you is going to know that you're a-1 the jury in fact causing more harm than good and so if you can think about that okay I'm coming into whatever I'm coming into a shop back into my family into a new job into a job interview let's look at what the real circumstances are here and let's aim for a fairly neutral thing at first until I truly see the subtleties(sutilezas) of what's happening around me and then look for incremental deliberate ways to end up being a positive influence and it's one of the things I learned to be successful as an astronaut but that's really pervasive(penetrante, extensivo) it and how I treat everything in life

If you could go back to being 18 again what Life Skills advice would you give yourself?

Something I've recently I tried to put into words and thought about is that you are the direct result of your own decisions whether you think you are not even by not making a decision you're still the direct result of that you're the product I've your decisions and it's not normally the big ones like deciding to be an astronaut that's not actually how it works what you really decide is am I going to eat this chocolate bar or not or am I going to spend the next half hour studying russian-language or not those eighty actual decisions that shape who you are and you are the result you are the end product here the your the package that is spinning(girar) out at the factory based on the decisions you made this afternoon the person you wake up tomorrow is slightly modified from who you are today by the decisions you make this afternoon and this evening recognizing that early I think is something I would a brief  myself I'm that having a long-term goal is important but in fact the little decisions you make every day not only do they define who you are but those are your life those little decisions you know being an astronaut that's something that might happen thirty years from now meanwhile you got your whole life to live and all those little decisions that you make and even the ones that you don't deliberately or consciously make they are the ones that define not only who you are but also the life that you have along the way so it's worth thinking about it.

One email

Hello Mike and Susan,

I've received your emails this week about our new colleague, Tom Watson. You are complaining he's just not a team player. You say he's uncooperative and seems bored with our project work.

I'd like to have a meeting tomorrow at 2 pm to discuss how we can take care of this problem. First, write up a list of five qualities you think are important for a good team player. Then come up with three action points on how we can deal with Tom.

Look forward to seeing you tomorrow.

Best wishes

Jon

Qualities  for a good team player: Organization, go to the point, share cookies, emphaty

Nevative: borred, lazy

One stop english (Pat recommend it, it's fantastic resource)

SONG

LIVE YOUR LIFE. MIKA

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qgs032SbjZs

You've got the whole world in your pocket
But you just don't know
Everybody's smilin' at you everywhere you go
It's like you've got that secret
Everybody else wants to know
Oh yeah

Anywhere you are is just like home to you
From the beaches in Manila
Down to Katmandu

Yeah you've got that secret
Everybody else wants to know
And you won't ever let it go oh

Everybody wanna hold your hand
Everybody wanna shine that bright
Everybody wanna say they can
Everybody wanna live your life

Everybody wanna talk like you
Only wanna do the things you do
'Cause they always gonna turn out right
Everybody wanna live your life

We take a whole room full of strangers
And we make them friends
We do it all around the world
Just so it never ends

It don't matter where we're coming from or going to
You're the only one that ever turns a grey sky blue
And everybody needs a friend like you

Everybody wanna hold your hand
Everybody wanna shine that bright
Everybody wanna say they can
Everybody wanna live your life

Everybody wanna talk like you
Only wanna do the things you do
'Cause they always gonna turn out right
Everybody wanna live your life

Somos ciudadanos del mundo, así
Yo siempre a tu lado y tú junto a mi
El mundo está en tus manos, no lo sabes ya
Como un diamante siempre brillara

Everybody wanna hold your hand
Everybody wanna shine that bright
Everybody wanna say they can
Everybody wanna live your life

Everybody wanna talk like you
Only wanna do the things you do
'Cause they always gonna turn out right
Everybody wanna live your life
